BURUNDI CHILDREN: UNCERTAIN FUTURE, P'SE HELP!

SOS Children in Burundi
Burundi is home to 3,733,000 children who live in abject poverty with chronic malnutrion and contagious diseases. They solely depend on foreign aid to survive. 12% of all childern in Burundi DIE at birth, with 20% DIE before their 5th birthdate. Burundi is one of the highest  child mortality rate in the world mainly due to Malaria, Diarrhoea, and pneumonia. Many children who are born alive are already infected with HIV/AIDS. And those who go on to live are immidiately left opharned to AIDS.

2. Many types of human rights violations that children experience in pre-trial detention, in the investigation and prosecution of cases, and while in prison.
Children are sometimes tortured to extract confessions, and most have no access to legal advice or representation. Children are locked up alongside adults in overcrowded and miserable conditions for months or even years as they await trial.
There is no juvenile justice system in Burundi. Under current laws, the age of criminal responsibility is 13. Minors between 13 and 18 years old found guilty of a crime benefit only from the reductions in sentences normally given to adults convicted of the same crime. There are currently no alternatives to incarceration for children and no services to help children once they are released from detention.

Testimony: 1
"The first time, I was in the shower, which was very small. An adult came in. He just forced himself on me. He was much bigger than me, so I couldn't do anything and I was in pain. I was too afraid and too ashamed to tell anyone, and he kept coming back to me. I never told anyone in the prison administration. I still have pain in my kidneys and in my stomach. I have diarrhea a lot."– Bunyigizwa A., 15, accused of theft, Gitega Prison, April 23,
Testimony: 2
"Sleeping is very hard, as there are about 27 of us in the one room. Some of us have to sit up all night. There are no separate showers and toilets for us, the children. It's bad for the kids when the adults are in the bathrooms. I check to see who is in there before going to shower."– Jean-Mutahigizwa, 14, accused of theft, Ruyigi Prison, April 16,

Human Rights Watch called on the government of Burundi and donors working in the justice sector, such as DFID and the European Commission, to support a juvenile justice system based on international standards of the rights of the child. The system must prioritize rehabilitation, social reintegration and alternatives to incarceration.

" I WILL NEVER WEAR CHILDREN HAIR EXTENSION AGAIN" VOWS SUPERSTAR JAMELIA

Whose Hair Is it anyway
Standing inside a Hindu temple in Chennai, India, I watch horrified as a two-year-old girl with long, dark tresses has her head shaved. She screams as the clippers buzz around her ears and her hair tumbles to the floor. She is clearly terrified and no doubt has little comprehension of what is happening to her
Jamelia
The pop star Jamelia with Tatiana, an 11-year-old Russian who sold her waist-length hair for just £10  roughly a month’s wages.

"Indeed, until I worked on this BBC investigation, I’m ashamed to admit I’d never once stopped to consider where the human hair I had pinned or sewn into my head had come from. Then I heard from a friend, earlier this year, that the hair used in the extensions are, mostly, taken from children, women or corpses. I was horrified. How did I know I wasn’t wearing a dead person’s hair? And if I was, had they agreed to that before they passed away, or had they simply had it shaved off in a mortuary without their family’s knowledge?"

JULIANA NALWANGWA (2) FATALLY SHOT AND KILLED BY POLICE

A suspect has been arrested in connection to the fatal shooting of two-year-old Juliana Nalwanga and her family awarded Shs1 million for her burial which took place on Friday, government officials have said.
Nalwanga was killed by what police say was a stray bullet in Masaka on Thursday, after security forces tried to disperse a walk-to-work demonstration. Information Minister Kabakumba Masiko confirmed the developments on Sunday, saying the government is following up on the case.

Chairperson for the Uganda Human Rights Commission Med Kaggwa said the body’s officers in Masaka have been conducting an investigation into the matter. “The action would be against the Attorney General, that is, if the man who shot was a policeman,” he said.

President of the Uganda Law Society Bruce Kyerere said the society has petitioned the Chief Justice, for an emergency seating of the Justice, Law and Order Sector stakeholders “to chart out rules of engagement for security forces and the management of public situations”.

The watotoz.blogspot.com stakeholders continue to raise alarm and advocacy for safety and security of the children, who mostly are the innocent victims, especially during both covert and overt management of violence and public demonstration.

Doctors at the Kenya Aids Vaccine Initiative (KAVI) are conducting a study on the vaccine that is billed to have the most advanced vaccine design ever tested. If the vaccine, known as Modified Vaccine Ankara (MVA), is proved to be effective in subsequent clinical trials, it is going to be given to all children after birth, the same way infants are given anti-tuberculosis vaccines at birth. According to Prof Walter Jaoko, the vaccine’s principal investigator, no adverse reaction has been recorded since the first baby got the vaccine.

Forty infants have so far been involved in the Aids vaccine trials, which started two months ago, and the results of the trials are expected in June 2012. Each baby will be followed for one year from the date of vaccination to monitor their immune response upon introduction of the vaccine. This response is measured by looking at the cellular immune response specific to HIV. This is where cells of the immune system kill cells that have been infected.

“This is a very delicate study and the volunteer is a person who cannot consent on his or her own. That is why we insist both parents consent to the trial to pre-empt future complications with one parent, especially the father, dissociating himself from the trials,” explained Prof Jaoko, who is also the acting dean at the University of Nairobi’s School of Medicine.

Uganda was one of the first countries in Africa to carry out an Aids vaccine trial in babies. Although the vaccine was found to be safe, it failed to generate a sufficient amount of immune response.
A number of studies done in America, Asia and Europe have shown some encouraging responses in infants who received an HIV vaccine, but not to the degree of response seen in adults. One of the reasons for this is infants’ rapidly developing immune system.

MJAKAZI/HOUSE GIRL AIBA MTOTO VICTORY CHARLES AFUNGWA JELA MIAKA SABA(7)

Amen

Police in Uganda said yesterday, they have arrested 104 people, 50 of whom were charged with holding illegal assembly and inciting violence. Dr Besigye of the Forum for Democratic Change and Mr Olara Otunnu of the Uganda Peoples Congress, were among opposition leaders charged with inciting violence and rioting after proclamation among other crimes. They were later freed on bail.
Uganda Red Cross last evening confirmed the death and other cases of people hit by bullets. At least four people in Kireka, including two pregnant women, were taken to hospital. In other pockets of different towns, children were left shocked, stranded and unattended during the upheaval.

Private schools in Uganda, have advertised massively and attracted students from neighbouring Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Sudan, Burundi and the DRC. This new phenomena is due to the apparently good education we provide, cheaper than their home countries but again very hard for the school managers to trace the students’ background. This severely puts the managers of the schools at risk of managing the general discipline.
Also some private schools have been licensed without meeting the minimum requirements and they have consistently lacked supervision. The education “investor” sometimes are out to maximize profits at the expense of the students and parents/guardians.

Malaria was once a leading child killer throughout Tanzania. As in many countries across Africa, it kept clinics and hospitals full, kept sick children out of school and was a major cause of lost productivity among adults. On World Malaria Day 25th April, 2011, high-ranking officials, including the President of Tanzania, will participate in the country’s celebrations. Zanzibar is on the spotlight as a region that has made great progress – and to which the rest of  Tanzania must catch up.
